Roman jewellery sometimes included gemstones set into finger-rings, earrings, and pendants. These stones are often carved with designs and are called intaglio. We recently found one of these intaglii during excavations at a site in Newcastle that has evidence for Roman activity. We think it depicts an animal, but we're still debating what it is! Suggestions so far have included a dolphin, a bird, or a hare. What do you think it could be?
